War and battle represent conflict in dreams. In reality, a person is fighting with one part of their personality for control. This causes an internal conflict that is expressed as fighting or battle in dreams.
Dreams of war may also represent a situation in reality that may require you to be assertive. This can be especially true of people with more passive personalities. The dream is revealing that a confrontation may be necessary to resolve a certain situation. This often means that someone or something in your life needs to be addressed in an aggressive manner in order to get resolution.
Veterans will sometimes dream about war based on their memories and trauma they have experienced. But since you write that you are not military the dream is most likely pushing you to gain control of an opposing situation or person.

I too often have this same dream, and within those dreams my fellow troops are often friends and acquaintaces. The status of my personal life is I am struggling t find work and I am dealing with severe pain from a back injury and I constantly struggle with a long time heroin addiction. So YES…. I am definitely what you could call ”upside down” in life! And I do feel like I am in a day-to-day personal battle with my demons so if this helps in any way then I’m happy to be able to share!
